Hello and welcome! I'm Charlie, the lead editor here at playthesimsgame.com. Over the past decade I've clocked hundreds of hours across every The Sims 3 world, documenting maps, rummaging through PackedWorld files and interviewing the most passionate Simmers in the UK and beyond.

If you've just only started your journey, or consider yourself a seasoned player, this living guide offers the kind of depth you won't find anywhere else. Let's unpack everything — starting with a map lover's dream. 🌍

What exactly are The Sims 3 Worlds?

Each Sims 3 world is a sprawling open neighbourhood — a true sandbox of interconnecting sub-neighbourhoods, hidden caves, community hotspots, residential zones and natural wonders. Unlike the more contained maps in earlier editions, The Sims 3 introduced a seamless open-world engine, meaning your Sims can wander, cycle and run to any lot without a loading transition.

From the sun-bleached shores of Isla Paradiso to the misty, mysterious alleys of Moonlight Falls, the variety is staggering. Here’s our hand-crafted guide organised by expansion pack release.

Pro note: Every world has its own “world file”, which stores terrain, lots, road networks and NPC data. This is why user-created custom worlds feel completely different from one another.

Every Official Sims 3 World — Full Catalogue

Beneath you will find the complete set of worlds published via base game, expansion pack, or the Sims 3 Store. We don't merely list them — we give you the texture, personality, and break down their strongest qualities for different styles of gameplay. If you're after Sim Game lore, you'll feel right at home here.

Sunset Valley

Base game · Classic suburb · Warm & inviting

Start your journey in the sun-drenched heart of the Sims universe. Themed with pure Americana vibes, Sunset Valley delivers a dependable mix: parks, museums, bars, and plenty of friendly faces. For new players, Sunset Valley is the ideal springboard — its flat terrain makes house-building approachable and routes are generally quick.

Hidden gem: The Alto family’s mansion contains a high-roller art collection worth multiple Simoleons. 😉

Riverview

Free download · Rural charm · Tranquil

Bucolic and sleepy, Riverview is the downloadable world that came free with early game registrations. Rolling pastures, rusted windmills and a gentle river bend define this location. It’s a perfect place for farming-based storytelling or a peaceful retirement narrative

Twinbrook

The Sims 3 Ambitions · Industrial · Eccentric

Say hello to Twinbrook, a grittier, swamp-fringed world that feels like the forgotten cousin of Sunset Valley. Abandoned-looking shacks, rusty bridges & charismatic locals. It’s arguably the best world if you enjoy rags-to-riches stories: scrap heaps spawn collectibles that can fund an empire.

Barnacle Bay

Store world · Pirate history · Shoreside

Ahoy! Pirate ships, hidden island coves, and nautical flairs. Barnacle Bay is evocative and thematic — a gorgeous terrain with tricky winding roads, but you'll be rewarded with fishing holes and treasure-digging opportunities at every corner.

Bridgeport

The Sims 3 Late Night · Metropolitan · High-rise

Glamour, nightlife and skyscraper views — Bridgeport is the longest night. Inspired by New York and London, it’s perfect for Sims in the music or acting professions. The elevator “high-rise living” dynamic adds a brand-new dimension. If you long for The Sims 3 Gameplay with urban grit, this is your stage.

Moonlight Falls

The Sims 3 Supernatural · Mythic · Moon-washed

When the full moon rises, everyone changes. Moonlight Falls is a bewitching world replete with gothic trees, glowing runes and strange spore fields. Vampires, werewolves, witches and fairies settle here harmoniously. A truly brilliant place for life-and-death storytelling arcs — although that guide focuses on the fourth iteration, the narrative cross-over inspiration is real.

Lunar Lakes

Store world · Alien style · Extraterrestrial

Take a warp-drive over to Lunar Lakes, a crystalline alien landscape with bubble-domed residences and gem-dusted terrain. This strange world is ideal for speculative sci-fi stories or unique legacy challenges. Gravity feels lighter, and the local life-forms are out of this world.

Hidden Springs

Store world · Mountain resort · Healing

Nestled among pristine alpine peaks, Hidden Springs is a picture-perfect spa town with naturally spawned moodlet-manager “relaxation” buffs. It doesn’t have many secrets, but it’s got picturesque scenery and very high property values for a prestige playthrough.

Dragon Valley

Store world · Celtic fantasy · Dragon lore

Ye olde world is upon you! Dragon Valley wears its mysticism proudly. Expect medieval squares, castle ruins, and — of course — actual dragons flying overhead. A niche but deeply loved world for fantasy story-simmers.

Monte Vista

Store world · Tuscany · Rustic Italian vibe

Cypress trees, sunny piazzas and grapevine-draped balconies. Monte Vista is a land of red wine and passionate artistry. This world excels for Nectar-making (the Sims equivalent of wine-making) thanks to its Nectar Shop and expansive vineyards. A true La Dolce Vita experience.

Aurora Skies

Store world · Scandinavian nature · Aurora borealis

Beautiful fjords, lush pine forest, and pulsing northern lights put Aurora Skies on the scenic map. Environmentally, it’s crisp and quiet. The world is compact yet satisfying, with more fishing spots than you can poke a rod at.

Isla Paradiso

The Sims 3 Island Paradise · Island archipelagos · Holidays

Set sail for tropical magnificence. Isla Paradiso is genuinely huge: beach resorts, inhabited islands, shipwrecks and houseboats — you can live entirely on the water. Note: this world is notorious for pathing issues because of its sheer complexity. Still, many fan-crafted fixes exist on forums. If you can make it work, it's absolutely glorious.

Oasis Landing

The Sims 3 Into the Future · Futuristic · Technological

What will the world look like in 200 years? Oasis Landing tells us — gleaming skyscrapers, robotic street sweepers, hover cars and Jetsons-style gadgets. It is the only world directly tied to the Time Portal from the Into the Future pack. Great for “futuristic legacy in the present” plotlines.

Roaring Heights

Store world · 1920s Art Deco · Boardwalk glam

Head inland to the roaring 1920s, where flappers and mobsters might rub shoulders. This small-ish but stylish world features an elegant seafront boardwalk and an enormous Art Deco ferris wheel. It’s one of the most beautifully art-directed Store worlds.

Midnight Hollow

Store world · Gothic Victorian · Halloween all year

Dollhouses with nail heads, black roses and a witch’s forest — Midnight Hollow is pure gothic melodrama. It exudes Tim Burton energy and is a brilliant mood-setting world for horror stories or mystery legacy challenges. Perfect to pair with content from Around The Sims 4 if you like atmospheric screen-shots on either game.

We should also mention that additional in-game destinations exist in expansion packs (World Adventures gives us France, China & Egypt — but technically those are “destinations” rather than residential worlds).

Easter eggs and hidden localities in Sims 3 worlds

One of the series’ pleasures is the sheer amount of secret locations tucked behind tricky paths or rabbit holes. Here are some of the finest finds in The Sims 3:

  • Spawn of the Kraken: Dive spots in Isla Paradiso.
  • The abandoned mine in Twinbrook: Filled with sparks and rare ores.
  • A secret greenhouse in Moonlight Falls: Grows flame fruit and plasma fruits.
  • Underground bunkers in Oasis Landing: Access via the “Time Portal”? Try using a Bot-building station nearby to find the back entrance.

If it’s items or custom content you’re looking for, The Sims Resource Cc offers a torrent of options to renovate just about any of these corners.

Deep Strategy: Selecting the Right World for Your Legacy

Not every world is suitable for every legacy. Below we have curated best-of lists for the most common player objectives.

🏆 Fastest way to become a millionaire

If you want to reach the top of the social ladder quickly, start in Bridgeport. The high-rise flats mean your Sim has low housekeeping time, and celebrity socialites give massive career boosts. A guitarist playing at The Grind can rake in a few thousand § a day. Once you are wealthy, level-up in the film career to get mogul-level bonuses.

🌳 World for large family generations

Sunset Valley remains king for legacy family play. Spacious lots, great school access, decent open spaces and easy mapping. But dedicated legaciers may prefer Monte Vista because the high-quality Nectar racket creates huge profit per child in the family business.

🧛 Supernatural & chaotic storylines

Moonlight Falls is the clear winner. With all Supernatural life states available and a supernatural population, you can create instantly dramatic feuds between vampires and witches. Want to take a bite out of your neighbour’s neck without breaking immersion? Moonlight Falls will be your den of darkness.

🚣 ‘Rags to Riches’ ultimate challenge

Twinbrook is the traditional pick for rags-to-riches due to dump-diving scrapyard access. However, Barnacle Bay has beached treasures that add a salvage-plot point.

Player Interview: RubyRune — 2,000 hours across every world

We sat down with UK-based Twitch streamer and devoted Sims 3 archive keeper RubyRune (she/her) to hear how she continues to make 15-year-old worlds feel brand new.

The Sims Game: Ruby, many players think Sims 3 is too old. What keeps you coming back?

RubyRune: Honestly? It’s the freedom that no other sims title has captured since. Let’s not glamorise technical issues — Bridgeport can lag like crazy — but being able to drive across your whole town without a single loading screen creates an immersion that holds up brilliantly. When you're streaming an heiress moving between districts, the audience really experiences the geography of the world.

The Sims Game: What’s your favourite underappreciated world?

RubyRune: Roaring Heights. Everyone and their nan fawns over Moonlight Falls or Isla Paradiso, but Roaring Heights has this clean, optimistic luxury. every road is a postcard. I adore turning the old pier into a nightclub district for live jazz sessions. The sheer style means your sims always look like they’re ready for a film premiere.

The Sims Game: Top tip for our readers seeking deep play?

RubyRune: Use every piece of expansion content that’s themed around a world. If you want to play Dragon Valley well, commit to the medieval overrides from The Sims Resource. Replace the modern clutter with custom clutter. Fill every void with a story. Otherwise you’re just playing the same squares of grass.

— Thanks Ruby, absolute gold!

World-Building Toolkit — creating your own world

If none of EA’s worlds fully scratch your itch, you can make your own using the in-game Edit Town tool plus CAW (Create a World Tool). It’s pretty deep but hugely rewarding. Use the Ea Sims resource hub to download CAW, then look for community tutorials that explain route-layer smoothing.

Three pitfalls avoid at all costs

  • Overly huge maps: A 256×256 terrain can have routing failures that make Sims disappear.
  • Invalid spawners: Use only world-specific spawners for game resources.
  • Road tool skips: Intersections that look fine on paper can create gaps where Sims refuse to walk.

Once you have built something special, don’t forget to export your world as a Sims3Pack and share it on forums. If you prefer external lot decorations, source The Sims Resource Lots to download rich custom lot details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Sims 3 world is the biggest physically?

Isla Paradiso is the largest by terrain area, with an extensive seafront stretching across multiple islands. It is also the densest by lot count with over 130 total lots.

Can I live in Oasis Landing without a time portal?

No, Oasis Landing is only accessible through the Future portal. Use mods if you want to set a permanent residence there in a regular save.

What happened to Barnacle Bay’s pirates?

It’s mostly historic theming. But if you complete a certain treasure map in the world, you gain access to a pirate-ship-sailable hidden island.

Do custom worlds affect performance?

Yes. Many custom worlds lack proper routing occlusion, which can worsen pathfinding suddenly. Read forum comments before downloading every great-looking world. If you really want a headache-free experience, play the polished worlds like Sunset Valley.

Is The Sims 3 available on modern (2025) Windows?

With the 64-bit Metal update on Mac (2023) and newer patches, many players can run TS3 on Windows 11; occasional fixes are required for multi-core CPUs. Check our The Sims Resource guide for detailed troubleshooting.
